Level 1 Charging
120v AC, standard house outlet
Level 1 charging is the most basic method for charging your EV, with no additional equipment required other than a standard household outlet. Set up details include:
- Charges a BEV (battery electric vehicle) to 80% from empty in 40-50+ hours
- Charges a PHEV (plug-in hybrid vehicle) in 5-6 hours
- Delivers 3-5 miles of range per hour of charging
- Estimated cost of a full charge = $11.05*
- No additional equipment or proper installation required
- Suitable for overnight charging or topping off the battery, but may not be ideal for daily drivers
Level 2 Charging
240v AC, requires a dedicated circuit
For charging electric vehicles (EVs), a 240-volt outlet – also known as a Level 2 charging outlet – is commonly used and provides faster charging speeds than a standard 120-volt outlet. Set up details include:
- Charges a BEV to 80% from empty in 4-10 hours
- Charges aPHEV in 1-2 hours
- Delivers 20-40 miles of range per hour of charging
- Requires professional installation of a dedicated EVSE (electric vehicle service equipment)
- Average installation costs range from $900-$1,200 for a typical accessible install, with the charger itself costing an additional $400-$800
- Additional Cost Considerations:
- If your electric panel needs upgrading to accommodate a Level 2 charger, upgrading costs can reach up to $3,500
- Many power companies offer rebates of $200-$1,000 for charger purchase or installation
- A 30% federal tax credit is available for installing an EV charging station (up to $1,00)
- Estimated cost of a full charge = $11.05*
- Ideal for daily drivers, those with longer commutes, or EVs with larger batteries
*Estimates cost of a full charge based on national average electricity cost of $0.17 per kWh and average battery size of 65 kWh*
